SUMMARY:Monthly Talk - Agincourt\, October 25th 1415: the most comprehensive victory by an English army on foreign soil.
DESCRIPTION:The talk is to be given by Michael Whatley\nAgincourt is not just the most famous battle in English history but is the story of one man’s determination to restore a reputation of ‘The Usurper’ handed down by his father. If he won the battle it proved that it was God’s will that he should inherit the throne. The odds against him were\, some say\, five to one\, but judge for yourself and hear the story from the beginning. \n \nMichael Whatley is a retired solicitor who has had a lifelong love of history from his earliest days at school. Since he retired he has studied medieval history and has given many talks covering a range of historical subjects\, amongst which the one on Agincourt is his favourite.

SUMMARY:Monthly Talk - Art And Design\, A Way Of Life.
DESCRIPTION:We welcome back Doug Patterson who last spoke to us in 2024 about Sacred Places and illustrated his talk with his own sketches of those sites. \nDoug originally studied at Hornsey College of Art\, and the Royal College of Art where he was awarded a Master of Arts Degree. He then studied Architecture at the Architectural Association\, graduating with a Diploma in Architecture. The same year he formed his own design practice. During his extensive career Doug has designed a wide variety of projects\, ranging from film sets\, to designing a private estate inspired by the architecture of the great Mughal Empire in India. This project included creation of a landscaped 35-acre garden the location a private island in the West Indies. The project involved extensive research\, design logistics\, sourcing materials and master craftsmen to execute the designs. Phase one of this project commenced in 1988 and was completed in 2000 – or so Doug thought. \nIn 2015 Doug was commissioned by a second client for a phase two of the Mughal project he originally had completed in 2000\, so forming a new design practice to design and build the new commissions which included a 75 meter high marble water cascade\, an astronomical observatory\, a glass cantilevered gymnasium\, a new wing to the main villa\, and three new guest houses. This was to be the culmination of phase one completed in 2000 for the new clients which would form phase two. \n \nVarious materials such as bronze and timber were sourced in southern India\, and the marble for both projects was mined in Makrana\, northern India. All the components were prefabricated and then transported to Udaipur and Agra where they were inlaid in pietra dura\, and finally shipped in containers from Mumbai to the island site in the West Indies. \n \nIn tandem\, Doug’s career as an artist has carried on. His works were featured in numerous solo and collective exhibitions\, while his paintings are in various private collections\, galleries and museums worldwide.

SUMMARY:Monthly Talk - ‘The Family’: From the Modern to the Postmodern? *DATE CHANGE*
DESCRIPTION:*NOTE DATE CHANGE*\nBy Dr Jack Fawbert. \nWe all talk about our ‘families’\, but what does ‘family’ really mean and is its meaning changing? In the 1950s\, sociologists\, in the western world at least\, used to talk about the ‘nuclear family’\, one that consisted of a heterosexual couple with children\, as the ‘ideal’ and as the norm in modernity.\nHowever\, it is now argued by many sociologists that in the postmodern world there have been profound economic\, social and political changes in society that have rendered such notions of ‘the family’ as atypical or even as obsolete.\nPostmodern societies emphasize individualism and ‘choice’ rather than the structural constraints of modernity. This talk explores the changes in what we might regard as ‘the family’ as well as questioning whether what was once known as ‘the cereal packet family’ was ever ‘ideal’ or\, indeed\, the norm.

SUMMARY:Monthly Talk - The Changing World of Personal Tax: or what you should know in order to sleep calmly at night.
DESCRIPTION:The speaker will be Paul Harris of Scrutton Bland\, u3a Bury St Edmund’s Accountancy firm. \nPersonal tax affects us all – not only during our working lives\, but into retirement and ultimately on death. Every Budget brings changes to the already complex rules\, and at a time of economic and political uncertainty the Chancellor is under pressure to squeeze every last penny from us. The drive towards digitisation\, and low service standards at HMRC\, only increase the difficulties facing the taxpayer. In this talk\, Paul Harris will outline some of the key issues that you need to be aware of\, and hopefully help you to sleep at night. \n \nPaul Harris is a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Adviser with some 40 years’ experience of advising individuals and their families on planning their financial affairs in connection with all taxes\, most notably Capital Gains Tax and Inheritance Tax. He joined the Bury St Edmunds office of Scrutton Bland in 2023\, having moved to East Anglia from the South Coast in 2014.
