Adult and Community Care

by Cllr.Beccy Hopfensperger and Jane Harvey from Suffolk County Council

March 2022

Care and support for adults | Suffolk County Council
The department is responsible for providing services for people requiring help and support at their own homes, residential and nursing care or with physical, learning disabilities or mental health problems.
The aim is to maximise opportunities for independent lives at home.
We learned that Suffolk’s performance was 10% above the national average. The speakers chose to focus on services for people at home and celebrated the introduction in 2021 of I Care which enabled service users to keep in touch with care workers through I T devices. This had resulted in the need for fewer Home care visits.
Surprisingly the speakers did not discuss charging or means testing for services or staff shortages.

Some feedback received from members attending commented on difficult to read presentation slides and use of acronyms such as CQC – the Care Quality Commission who have a critical role in setting and inspecting against standards for care providers.

A mixed response to a very interesting lecture with a positive follow up for u3a in helping to promote I Care to members discussed in principle at Committee.

A noted point for all lectures is to give time for questions to speakers.
David Dawson, Lectures Co-ordinator would be interested in feedback on any lecture and on ideas from members for future lectures. Please email
