Monthly Talk – Science, Technology & Art

This month’s talk will be given by Steve Jones – Science and technology are developing at an unprecedented rate and having a huge impact on all arts.
This talk will cover some of the ways in which science is being used to revolutionise our understanding of historical art, while new technologies enable entirely new artistic approaches.
The coverage is wide: It starts with unravelling mysteries, including a Babylonian goddess, Maya painting, Seurat’s only self-portrait, Modigliani’s mistress, and then moves on to the production of impossible jewellery, robotic sculpture, and the rapidly developing use of AI in painting, photography, literature, music and film.
While the future is uncertain, some historical comparisons may give clues to how the arts will survive and develop.
